Who should participate?
Managing Warehouse Operations is a three day course and is aimed at individuals and teams involved in first-line management of a warehouse. This course is particularly relevant to organisations looking to enhance the efficiency of its current warehouse operations through improved working methods, processes and layout.
Course content
Full details of the outcomes that delegates can expect to derive are provided overleaf but there are three elements to the course:
- Managing Goods Inwards and Storage
- Managing the Order and Despatch Operations
- The Provision and Care of Warehouse Resources
In addition to full access to our library of learning material, participants will engage in practical exercises covering the application of the theory in:
- Fundamental warehouse management knowledge
- Storage and distribution management essentials
- Warehouse mapping
- Stock positioning
- ABC analysis to examine demand and resource allocation
How will they learn?
Participants of Warehouse Operations will be introduced to the Fundamental Warehouse Management knowledge required of supervisors/managers in the storage and distribution industry. How these concepts relate to the individual delegate’s roles and understanding of their businesses will be defined through a series of presentations, group discussions and practical tasks. Participants will engage in Warehouse Mapping, Stock Positioning, ABC Analysis and a range of techniques designed to examine demand and resource allocation. These activities are designed to create cross-function discussion and generate improvement opportunities.

Content
Managing the Goods Inwards and Storage Operations
- Draw a plan for the daily receipt and storage of in-bound goods
- Allocate labour and other resources in relation to this plan
- Modify planned activity at short notice should the necessity arise
- Produce a plan for the optimal positioning of in-bound goods
- Use information on in-bound goods and storage and an aid to assisting the work in other parts of the warehouse
- Analyse staff training needs and know how these needs could be satisfied
- Ensure adequate controls are in place for the safe and efficient receipts and storage of in-bound goods
- Analyse information on the performance standards of the in-bound goods operation taking any necessary action.
Managing the order and despatch operations
- Draw a plan for daily order picking and despatch operations
- Allocate labour and other resources in relation to this plan
- Modify planned activity at short notice should the necessity arise.
- Produce a plan for the physical organization of the despatch holding function
- Use information from the order picking process to liaise with other parts of the business
- Analyse staff training needs and know how these could be satisfied
- Ensure adequate controls are in place for the safe and efficient picking and despatch of goods
- Analyse information on performance standards in the picking and despatch operation, taking any necessary action
The provision of care of warehouse resources
- Specify what equipment is needs for the efficient operation of the warehouse
- How to analyse performance data and use it to assist in improving warehouse efficiency
- Make an assessment of staff training needs and monitor the effectiveness of the training
- Ensure equipment is regularly check and any necessary servicing is carried out
- Analyse information generated from the regular checking and servicing of warehouse equipment
- Take decisions when unsafe equipment needs to be removed from the operation
- Apply the principles of costing to the operation of the warehouse
- Appreciate why financial objectives have been given and how budgets are determined
- Make all staff fully aware of the need to minimise costs
